about

The EP is an exploration of the emotional and cultural power of Splice samples as a vehicle for music production. Splice is an online royalty-free library where users can peruse and download royalty-free samples (in exchange for a subscription fee) for use in music productions. it often gets legitimate criticism for 'producing by numbers’ and reducing artist content to buyable samples. However, despite the obvious trappings of neoliberalism, there is an emotional power that, if used correctly is, in the words of the producer himself, useful:

‘I've avoided using splice samples in my work to date because there is a general snobbery around using royalty-free archives for ‘serious’ music production. I think this snobbery can be uncreative and myopic - what I’ve found is that by using these samples- quite shamelessly- I have been able to enhance the emotional resonance of my own electronic productions beyond my original intentions- it's opened doors that I didn’t realise existed. These emotional spaces have in turn allowed me to explore my own emotional life in ways I couldn’t have done before.

In a way, I'm not entirely comfortable with this. I think that the commodification of music is a serious problem and, in a way, a for-profit company like Splice is part of a general wealth extraction from musicians. However, For this EP I used Splice vocal samples to transform my own productions- in a sense I treated this static library of vocals as a fellow musician; as if it were a real-life collaboration rather than simply auditioning samples. Through this process, there is an intriguing mystery around the creative process that I have found liberating. Rather than second guess myself and worry about someone saying’ But it's just a Splice sample’ - this EP proudly says ‘yes- this is mostly Splice vocal samples- now put down your cynicism and enjoy’. Despite the rotten core of capitalism at the heart of the EP- there is a small, beautiful mushroom growing out of it that is simultaneously joyful and yet deeply sad in its own existence. '
